There's A Hole In My Sidewalk

I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost .... I am helpless.
It isn't my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend that I don't see it.
I fall in again.
I can't believe I am in this same place.
But, it isn't my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I
see it is there.
I still fall in ... it's a habit ... but, my eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is
my fault.
I get out immediately.

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

I walk down another street.

"Unsafe" Abortions (?)

This just in- teaching people to count. Making my science education of some use.

Reuters headline:
Unsafe abortions kill 70,000 a year, harm millions
Tue Oct 13, 2009 1:29pm EDT
  • Abortion rates fall but unsafe abortions still kill 70,000
  • Women in countries with restrictive laws are at risk
  • Dangerous abortion imposes heavy economic, health burden

Here is where the article completely makes the headline a (horrific) joke-
Despite easier access to abortion with restrictions being relaxed in many countries, the number of abortions fell from an estimated 45.5 million in 1995 to 41.6 million in 2003, the report by the U.S.-based Guttmacher Institute said.

But the study found a stubbornly high number -- almost 20 million -- of unsafe abortions, mostly in poorer countries and often carried out by the women themselves using inappropriate drugs or herbal potions, or by untrained traditional healers.

41.6 million abortions, to use the latest number, equals 41.6 million people killed per year-not 70,000.

41.6 million innocent human babies ground up and thrown away.
But to the media and the political left the horror is that an additional 70,000 women are killed.

To me, the horror is that 140,000 is the additional number killed, not 70,000.
To explain to the poor muddled masses of the left:
70,000 mothers + 70,000 babies killed each year in "unsafe" abortions = 140,000 dead.

41,600,000 + 140,000 makes an even 41,740,000 DEAD.

What is it that makes an abortion safe?
Apparently a 50% mortality rate is considered perfect, a "perfectly safe abortion." As long as one of the two people undergoing the procedure can walk away it is a "safe" abortion.
Usually that survivor is the mother, usually the one who dies is the baby: 50 - 50
Only when the mother is also at risk of injury or death is it "unsafe" and worthy of news coverage, international health outcry, and calls for more funds to ensure that 50/50 ratio is more carefully maintained.

"Glo"-ing endorsement?

Since the 1450's the Bible has remained unchanged. Yes, the word of God is unchanging, and must be vigilently defended and kept. But that is not what I am talking about.

Since Gutenberg invented the printing press and printed his first Bible five and a half centuries have passed and our Bibles have not changed in format.

I propose that those of us serious about the Bible and what it contains enter the 21st century.

Be sure to check out Glo "a better Bible."

Glo will be in retail stores on October 15, 2009. I have ordered it and post a review after I receive it and have a chance to look it over.

Sure its not cheap.
Don't make me start off on what you spend on meals, and movies, and clothes, and . . .
And it turns out to be only about what you pay for a leather bound Bible you set on the shelf in you library anyway.

What does that mean to you?

Know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. (2 Peter 1:20,21)

All scripture is inspired by God. (2 Tim 3:16)
"inspired" by God - theo pneustos That is literally, God breathed.
God actually breathed the words He wanted to give to us. That is truly amazing! Perhaps that is why scripture tells us "the word of God is living and active." (Heb 4:12) We know that "the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being." (Gen 2:7) This similarity in creative work should give us reason to esteem the scripture carefully.
The men who were His "instruments" were faithful, and none of what was written was of their own interpretation. It was God's interpretation.

And yet...
So much of what is called "bible study" today is a group meeting, reading a passage from scripture, and then asking, "What does that passage mean to you?"
Just in case there is not someone there to volunteer, "Well, I think this means...", groups usually have a "study guide" which will conveniently have the guided question: "Ask each person to tell the group what this passage means to them."

That is not Bible study. It is simply shared ignorance.
Where is the one to proclaim, "thus saith the Lord?"
If there is no one who knows, let them (all) keep silent.
The key to Bible study is asking "What is God saying here?" "What does He mean?" (What does it mean to God?)

Asking, "What is this verse saying to you?" is making it your own personal interpretation, something even the writers dared not consider.

Whatever shall we do? Who will deliver us from our plight?

"And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ."(Eph 4:11-15)

Christ has given us the gift of teachers. Actually the gift of pastor teachers.

Please keep that in mind the next time you hear...
"What does that mean to you?"

HUMILITY

Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. (1 Peter 5:5)

WARNING! Hate Speech

If you are overly sensitive to speaking God's truth to unrighteous behavior
-or-
If you have any violent tendencies
PLEASE DO NOT READ FURTHER

I had to place that warning in an attempt to avoid any backlash in the future from what is being considered at present in the United States Congress.

That is because the currently planned laws would make the following word of God to be labeled hate speech:

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them. (Rom 1:20-32)

While you will not hear these words preached from any of the "mainline" churches in America today, I just wanted to get them out before they were officially banned from all pulpits.

The Green Letter Bible

You've heard of the Red Letter Bible? The one where all the words of Jesus are in red letters?
There are "Red Letter Christians" who only read those parts of the Bible and develop their religion from them.
To them Christianity means living a certain lifestyle and making "disciples" of all people so that the whole world will become the "Kingdom" suitable for the return of the King. ("Thy kingdom come")
Well, now there is a Bible for all the Gaia worshippers out there- the "Green Letter Bible."
"The Green Bible will equip and encourage people to see God's vision for creation and help them engage in the work of healing and sustaining it. With over 1,000 references to the earth in the Bible, compared to 490 references to heaven and 530 references to love, the Bible carries a powerful message for the earth."
"Understand the Bible's powerful message for the earth" is how this Bible is promoted. As recommended by Larry Schweiger, president and CEO, National Wildlife Federation, "With The Green Bible highlighting relevant verses and offering solid context, we must heed the call to solve urgent climatic and ecological threats facing creation."

Me? I'm a black letter Christian.
I read the Bible's powerful message for the earth to be:
And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound. The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up. And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed. And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter. And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise. And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound! (Rev 8:6-13)
Three more woes yet to come!
The ultimate outcome of the earth?
The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. (2 Peter 3:9-13)
Do you wonder if these verses concerning the earth are green in the Green Letter Bible?

The "message" of the Bible?
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. (2 Cor 5:17-20)

The 2 Kinds of Faith

"Unanswered prayer stands between the individual and a faith life."

That is the opening sentence of a booklet by E.W. Kenyon titled The 2 Kinds of Faith.

I have spent a considerable amount of time reflecting on that supposition. How many, I wonder, are involved enough in their Christian walk to have this kind of thought rise to the surface of their consciousness? In our society today there is such an excess of plenty that one can obtain an acceptable level of living purely by osmosis. It is easy then to say, "Praise the Lord!" because it is obvious it came from Him and, after all, they DID pray for it.

There is a division at that point in life, however. On the one hand there are those as above who get what they are satisfied with in a reasonable amount of time and simply go on living as always. These are the same people that populate the "Success" seminars and make all the positive thinking preachers (religious or secular) rich.

The other side of the split is those who do not obtain what they want or need. Out of the many, many books dealing with the subject of unanswered prayer the overwhelming majority present the solution as some form of sin correction rather than dealing with the root of prayer- faith.

This booklet provides one of those light bulb moments in understanding the workings of faith. In it is presented the contrast between mere "Mental Assent" and "Faith."

The most basic point of relevance regarding these two reveals itself in the Bible teaching about Jesus. How many people give mental assent to the truths regarding Jesus, yet never truly exercise faith in Him for their personal salvation?

Such a person will always be separated from God-
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "but the righteous man shall live by faith." (Rom 1:16-17)

A Mustard Seed

Sometimes it seems that I think about things other people just pass over. I am not always sure if I just missed the point, or if everyone else didn't know there was a point.

"Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you." (Matt 17:20)

How big is a mustard seed?

And move a mountain ?!!!?
I remember a time when I was praying for the faith to move my truck when it broke down! (It didn't budge.) Obviously I have nothing remotely close to "size of a mustard seed" faith.

So is faith big and small, or great and little?
Either way, how do I get more faith?!!! I don't really care to move mountains, but gee, everyday things are really wearing me out.

Here I will go back to my opening, this is where I seem to veer off away from other people. That is because this really bothers me. I just don't understand this, and I seriously want to.
How am I going to get my obviously microscopic faith larger?

I see people who offer up or attempt various methods:
Some people pray. And they pray really hard, too. I can tell because of how loud and how serious their voices get.

They call that faith, but it just looks like they have finally convinced themselves- and whatever happens is fine with them.
Pray harder + think harder → more faith.

Other people talk. By that I mean they are convinced that "the power of death and life are in the tongue" (Prov 18:21) These people end up either like the Positive Thinking teachers whose only ccomplishment is making money selling books to people desperate to be "successful." Or they end up like the "white" witches, casting spells with their words to get what they want.
It doesn't seem to me like either of these have anything to do with God.

Jesus said to "Have faith in God." (Mark 11:21) God, not words, or any other thing I can imagine or work hard at.

Here I come to the end of this post.
What? you thought I had some quick, smart answer to give you?
No. This is way too important for something I can just come up with. (Even though I have not just started to think on this. Thirty years and enough books on prayer and faith to fill a library have gone into my desperate pursuit of faith.) Plus, I said in the beginning, this bothers me. A lot. Because I really don't have the answer to faith that "will move mountains."

I do promise though to add some later posts with very serious, and helpful, information and ideas for you to aid you in your pursuit of "faith the size of a mustard seed."

Wretched Man That I Am

Many people relate to the teaching on prayer from Luke 18 where the publican "standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner." (Luke 18:13)
Mistakenly taking the teaching of Jesus regarding the publican and the Pharisee, "I tell you, this man [the publican] went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted." (Luke 18:14) They add to this the teaching of Paul "Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death?" (Rom 7:24)

Why do I say mistakenly? Isn't that what both Paul and Jesus intended us to feel?
In a word, NO!
So many Christians are stuck at Romans 7:24, unable to move on to Romans 7:25! How is it this horrible, condemning verse is so well known, and the next verse is forgotten? For it says,

"Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin."

What of this next verse? And how could that be "thanks be to God"?
Unfortunately, a long time ago verse and chapter numbers were added to the Bible. (Unfortunate only in the fact that some divisions occur where they disrupt a thought.)
Thus Romans chapter 8 begins (as we all know) "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus!" (Rom.8:1) (We all know this verse, but we have learned it in isolation, not relating it to the two verse right before it.)

Why do we condemn ourselves when God has said there is now no condemnation? The better question would be, "Why have we been taught to condemn ouselves?"

There is now no condemnation.
How can anyone call themselves "wretched" when they know this truth: "He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him" (2 Cor 5:21)?

Righteous or Wretched? What has God said?

What then about, "standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven" (Luke 18:13)?
Please! "Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water." (Heb. 10:19-22)

Yes! Draw near to God with confidence! Having faith in the rightousness bestowed upon us in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."

"Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near." (Hebrews 10:23-25)

Consider this my attempt to "provoke" (literal translation) you to love and good deeds, and especially assembling together in fulll assurance of our righteousness in Christ and our standing before God with no thought of condemnation.

What God has declared righteous, who are we to call "wretched"?

Be Still

(The next in a series of posts on Prayer, so get ready to think.)

Be still, and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10 KJV

This verse has been widely used as a prooftext for teachings on prayer and meditation. As in all proper Bible study,we must look at the context of a verse, and the original meaning of the words to make sure we are correctly applying it. In the case of Psalm 46, a psalm of only 11 verses, not looking at the context is inexcusable. What does "Be still" mean in the original language? Does it mean to be quiet? To "center" oneself in preparation for hearing from the LORD? (Who is apparently unable to speak loud enough to penetrate your normal, noisy, preoccupied state.)

1God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
2Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
3Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.
4There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.
5God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.
6The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.
7The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
8Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth.
9He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.
10Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
11The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. (Psalm 46:1-11 KJV)

be still: STRONGS H7503 raphah: to slacken, abate, cease, consume, fail, (be) faint, be (wax) feeble, forsake, idle, leave, let alone (go, down), (be) slack, stay, be still, be slothful, (be) weak (-en).

The Keil & Delitsch Commentary tells us:
"Cease, cries He (Psa 46:10) to the nations, from making war upon my people, and know that I am God, the invincible One..." Continuing, they compare it to Psalm 21: 1-12 about which they comment, "A similar inferential admonition closes Psa 2:1-12. With this admonition, which is both warning and threatening at the same time, the nations are dismissed; but the church yet once more boasts that Jehovah Sabaoth is its God and its stronghold."

It is apparent from reading Psalm 46 and from the statements of Keil and Delitsch that "Be Still" has nothing whatsoever to do with some inner condition preparing for spiritual activity. At the conclusion of a psalm describing the vain warring of the nations against the people of God, Jehovah God commands the nations to cease their warring, and to know that He is God. He will be exulted among the heathen and He is with "us," His people. The reality then is that this is not a call to God's people to quiet themselves in order to know that He is God, but it is in fact a command issued to those who are NOT His people to stop waging war against Him and His people.
As the New American Standard translation puts it "Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah. (Ps. 46:10,11)

CONCLUSION
We have seen that a true interpretation of Psalm 46:10 proves it to have no relationship to prayer or meditation, but instead to war. With that knowledge, let us move on to other verses which actually do pertain to prayer to establish a scriptural foundation upon which to build our prayer life. Additionally, we must push back against the incursion of Eastern meditation practices into the church. True Christian meditation has nothing to do with "being still" or "quiet." It is always an active process. It is in fact, work.

The Foolishness of AA

Get ready for more hurt feelings.
In which I point out the foolishness of 12 Step Programs and the other Pop Psych Self Esteem philosophy which has taken over Christendom.

Step 1. I admitted I was powerless over alcohol and my life had become unmanageable.

This is followed by the 11 Steps of how I will overcome my addiction and how I will begin to manage my life. The first of these steps being-

Steps 2&3 I turn my life over to a God I create in my own imagination.

Somehow this is believed to be simpler and more powerful than saying, "Stop doing that. Take responsibility for your life and do what is right."

This sounds somewhat like a Biblical theme, "Become sober-minded as you ought, and stop sinning;" (1Cor.15:34) Probably that is why it is not said. Give a sin a different name, tell people it is not their fault, but most of all keep God out of this. (The real God that is.) (Is 45:5)

A god that comes from a man's imagination is merely an image of himself. For there are only two gods in a man's life, Self and Christ. The decision to follow one excludes the other. (Matt 16:24, Mark 8:34) The decision to follow Christ is the way of life (John 14:6).

I say allow the world to have their way. Allow the courts to accept only one method of "treatment" for people with addictions. The courts are of the world, not of the church. But I demand at all times that the world be kept OUT of the church.(James 4:4) And that in the church there be nothing spoken and taught but Christ and Him crucified, risen and coming again. (1 Cor 2:2)

Why is it again they do not use the Gospel? (Rom 1:16-17)

What about the dinosaurs?

What Really Happened to the Dinosaurs?
"Dinosaurs are used more than almost anything else to indoctrinate children and adults in the idea of millions of years of earth history. However, the Bible gives us a framework for explaining dinosaurs in terms of thousands of years of history, including the mystery of when they lived and what happened to them. Two key texts are Genesis 1:24–25 and Job 40:15–24."

Read this article from Answers in Genesis to learn the truth about dinosaurs, evolution and man.

I am posting this link as a service to the many Christians who honestly do not know what happened to dinosaurs. The church has done an extremely poor job of teaching its people the truth regarding the history of man as it is recorded in Genesis. It is as if the record of the people in the Genesis account were some kind of morality play instead of the word of God.

You do not have to "go against science" or have "blind" faith to know what the truth is relating to dinosaurs and evolution. Read this article and the other materials this ministry has to rest secure in the knowledge of the truth.

(Romans 1:20-23)

Hopefully this knowledge will help strengthen your faith and give you "Answers in Genesis." (1 Peter 3:15)

Mother of God?

At some point someone might think, Well, if Mary is the mother of Jesus. And Jesus is God. Doesn't that make Mary the mother of God?" Isn't that logical?

Well, "somebody" has thought of that and the Catholic Church made it a dogma of the (Roman Catholic) faith. Thus Mary was proclaimed theotokos, "Mother of God" at the Ephesus Council in 431 AD.

At what point would you think that real logic would intervene in this fatuous reverie?

How is it remotely possible that the infinite Creator of the universe and all that is in it, The Eternal, could have a mother? When was it The Eternal One was born?

Mary was the mother of Jesus, the Son of Man. God with us, (Immanuel) (Luke 1:30-33) who came and dwelt in human flesh so that He might suffer and die to redeem us from the sin in which we so readily wallow. (Eph. 1:7, Heb. 9:15)

I in no way wish to belittle Mary. For who in the history of (wo)man is like her? And of whom has it been said, by an angel no less, "Greetings favored one. The Lord is with you." (Luke 1:28) No, indeed Mary stands high enough on her own merit as a human being, and the mother of Jesus.

Yet she was a human being who did not understand what it was her Son was doing. (Luke 2:49-51, John 2:1-4) A human being who desperately needed to be saved, redeemed from the wretched sin nature she posessed as a daughter of Eve. (Gen. 3:17, 20, Rom. 3:10, 3:23)

Bless Mary for her faithfulness by which our Lord came to dwell in human form, for nursing Him and raising Him up to be a man.

And bless your mother for bringing you into this world, for giving you life. Bless her with the gift beyond measure- share with her the love of Jesus Christ which dwells in your heart because you have also been born again. (John 3:4-7)

New Counter

I have added a new counter to the right hand column of this blog.

Underneath my picture you will see the number of innocent children MURDERED since the time you opened this page.

It is impossible to truly fathom it, but as the numbers fly by-
each and every one of those fleeting images is a human life.

A human life snuffed out before it ever sees the light of day.
One that may have discovered the cure for cancer,
or that grew up to become the next Billy Graham.

Chance (?)

I cannot imagine the faith necessary to believe in evolution after viewing the vast cosmos we know as our heavens.
Romans 1:20-23
As we look out into the vast expanses of space, we also now look in-- to the vast intricacies of life. For those of us who studied Biology in school, recall that ATP is the energy source used by all living cells, I offer the following video to consider:

I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well. Psalm 139:14

I defy anyone to explain away the hand of a designer in this one key, of many such keys, required for a living cell to function. I am so happy that I have a living God. One who knows me and keeps me. (And keeps me together! Col. 1:17)

p.s. Having also studied Mechanical Engineering I was dumbfounded at the sheer mechanical structure of this proton rotor!

Shooting Back

What would you do if armed terrorists broke into your church and starting attacking your friends with automatic weapons in the middle of a worship service?

Would you be prepared to defend yourself and other innocents?

Would you be justified in doing so?

Is it time for Americans to consider such once-unthinkable possibilities?

There is one man in the world who can address these questions with first-hand experience.

His name is Charl van Wyck – a South African who was faced with just such a shocking scenario.

In Shooting Back: The Right and Duty of Self-Defense van Wyk makes a biblical, Christian case for individuals arming themselves with guns, and does so more persuasively than perhaps any other author because he found himself in a church attacked by terrorists.

Martin Luther on Romans

For close to 30 years I have been telling people that if they have a question about religion- the answer is most likely going to be found in the book of Romans. It is the defining book on Christianity and is, according to Luther, "a short summary of the whole of Christian and evangelical doctrine" that also provides "an access to the whole of the Old Testament"

See what else Martin Luther has to say in this excerpt from the preface to his commentary on Romans:
This letter is truly the most important piece in the New Testament. It is purest Gospel. It is well worth a Christian's while not only to memorize it word for word but also to occupy himself with it daily, as though it were the daily bread of the soul. It is impossible to read or to meditate on this letter too much or too well. The more one deals with it, the more precious it becomes and the better it tastes. Therefore I want to carry out my service and, with this preface, provide an introduction to the letter, insofar as God gives me the ability, so that every one can gain the fullest possible understanding of it. Up to now it has been darkened by glosses [explanatory notes and comments which accompany a text] and by many a useless comment, but it is in itself a bright light, almost bright enough to illumine the entire Scripture.(1)

"Memorize it word for word." To make such a statement today would be looked upon as foolishness. "Everyone knows" that is just too much for someone to commit to memory.

How about simply reading the book through? Is that too much? Yet, how many who call themselves "Christian" in this country have read the entire book of Romans? Is it any wonder there is so little understanding of the true gospel?

From the very opening where Luther finally found peace with God and opened the door to what we now know as the Refomation. (Rom.1:16-7) On through the "Roman Road" that has been used to lead thousands to salvation. (Rom.3:23, Rom.6:23, Rom.5:8, Rom.10:9,10) Then giving us the surest promise to save and secure from the judgment we know is coming. (Rom. 8:1) Romans is the truly unique book of knowledge.

Read it yourself. Do yourself a favor.

What They Believe

Here is a short cartoon explaining what Mormon theology teaches. This is not widely known and thus people are confused into thinking that Mormons are actually Christians. Mormons call themselves Christians while at the same time saying that every other church is false. Think about that the next time you hear someone say what great examples of Christianity Mormons are.

Spiritual Growth

"Spiritual growth" has to be in the top 5 abused teachings in the church today. It means everything from feeding the poor to getting more people to come to church. Generally though it is related to learning and keeping certain rules or Bible truths. Pray more. Read the Bible more. Go to church more. All great things, and all things that a spiritually mature person does. But doing them does not make you "spiritually" mature.
In all of these teachings the one thing that is never defined, much less nurtured to grow, is what exactly "spiritual" means. Learning Bible verses and truths is actually academic or mental growth. Observing more and more laws or principles, or practicing rituals is behavioral growth.
Consider the teachings of early Dispensationalist J.B. Stoney on this matter:
Reformation or Transformation?

Everyone according to his moral sense, if he is true to his conscience, refuses the evil and seeks the good; and as the conscience becomes enlightened, this is more definitely insisted on. This is the principle of law; obedience was enjoined by the law however contrary to the natural man. Now when grace comes in, the believer rejoices in the assurance of his forgiveness, and, as he knows atonement, his conscience constrains him to live to please God; but this is often taken up on the principle of law, so that self-improvement becomes his great aim, and the law his standard of walk.
Now it should be plain to anyone who understands the Gospel, that in the fulness of the grace of God, the man who offended against God was judicially terminated in the Cross, and the one who believes in the Second Man is justified. He should know that he is not now in the flesh, in Adam before God but in Christ; and that any attempt which he may make to improve his old man in conduct is in reality a flagrant, though unintentional, denial of the greatness of the grace of God.
But this is a wile by which many are captured and detained. Almost every believer is more or less caught in this snare, and many, alas! continue in it to the end of their course. Very few learn early in their history what it is to be in Christ, and thus meet to enjoy fellowship with the Father. Until this is known he is necessarily occupied with himself. As a result he sometimes subjects himself to much self-mortification in the effort to repress or improve the tendencies of the flesh, and this goes on until the cry is not, Who will improve me? but "Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?"
The word "transformation" occurs twice in Scripture with reference to Christians (Rom. 12:2, and 2 Cor. 3:18). Every believer tries to be reformed, but very few apprehend the great moral difference between reformation and transformation. As a rule believers rejoice that they are saved, and aim to be up to the language of Micah 6:8, "to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God."
There are increasing numbers who have accepted the truth that by the grace of God they have been transferred from Adam to Christ, and that they are clear of the old man in God's sight; yet they have no true understanding of what it is to be "transformed." Reformation is improvement, and refers to what already exists; but transformation means a change of being. This, it is feared, is little known.

I hate CATS

In this post I begin a series on Prayer. I hope to challenge you in your complacency and your misconceptions about this most important part of the Christian life. What you may initially think I mean in the title of this post is probably one of the things you find least "offensive" in the following series, -or, hopefully, not.

The problem with prayer is that people have learned everything they know about it from the wrong places. They have either read a book or heard a message on prayer. While that in itself is not bad, it becomes bad when it is not backed up by Scriptural truth.

Wait, it gets worse. In the worst offenses against "truth in prayer" the Bible itself is used as the starting point for the teaching. "How could that be bad?" you ask. It is bad because while they may start with the Word, instead of going into the truth of the text, they launch out into fantasy. These false teachings are repeated over and over until they eventually become doctrine.

To begin again,
I don't hate cats--the furry little vermin--although my attitude towards them is in fair approximation to their obvious disdain for me.

I hate CATS.
The dreaded teaching that "Prayer is Confession, Adoration, Thanksgiving and Supplication."

It is obvious but not certainly trite to say, words have meanings. Each one of these words have a meaning, their own individual meaning.

Confession is not thanksgiving, adoration is not supplication. Go through all of the permutations and you end up with:
Prayer is NOT Confession, Adoration, Thanksgiving or Supplication.

What is prayer? - Prayer is ASKING.
By mixing in the activities which go along with prayer the most important (from our perspective) fact concerning prayer is obfuscated- the answer to prayer is RECEIVING.

With that understanding clear in our minds we can move on to an effectual prayer life and avoid all of the pseudo-spiritual maneuverings and Oprah book of the month plans and search out the true teaching and meaning of prayer from the source- God's Word.

With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints Ephesians 6:18
